Support Small Business This Holiday

So, I know this post is a week late. I forgot to post thanks to all the Thanksgiving craziness. But luckily, a post like this is great for any time of the year. Especially for any Christmas shopping you have left over (which is my entire list – hello procrastination)

As everyone knows, the day after Thanksgiving comes Black Friday, a truly frightening day. Crowds and tired, grumpy people. Nope! No shame if it is your thing. There are some great deals out there and it is a great way to save money on items you may need.

But what day I like more is Small Business Saturday. It’s the day after Black Friday and meant to encourage people to get out and support their local shops.

Time Mag wrote an article about how buying locally is good for the economy. “By shopping at the corner store instead of the big box, consumers keep their communities from becoming what the NEF calls "ghost towns" (areas devoid of neighborhood shops and services) or "clone towns", where Main Street now looks like every other Main Street with the same fast-food and retail chains.”

I’m of the mind that you get what you pay for. Yes, buying locally can often be more expensive, but the product is often of higher, lasting quality. Also, that money is going back into your city instead of lining the pockets of big business (as previous graphic shows).  I love the idea of helping support the kind and hardworking people in my city. I meet many of them and have relationships with the people at my regular spots.

This holiday season, shop locally. You won't ever regret it.
