Cleaners Hall of Shame

"Will burn skin & eyes"

"Will penetrate skin & attack underlying tissues & bone."

"Suspected of damaging the unborn child."

Um, yikes.

A friend of mine recently sent me something I hadn't seen before - a cleaner "Hall of Shame" list from EWG. I love EWG & go there to check the toxicity of body products (& used it a lot in my makeup research). But I hadn't seen their cleaners list!

Now, I have been using natural cleaner for a while (I'll go over those at the end) but it was interesting to see, in writing, how horrible these commercial cleaners are. Back in the day, I had my kitchen cleaner, a bathroom (sink/tub/shower) cleaner, a toilet cleaner, a window/glass cleaner, a carpet cleaner - you get the idea. I can still see each cleaner in my head (& smell them - yuck). I have definitely used some of the cleaners on this Hall of Shame list.

I understand what it is to know something is bad, but want to somewhat ignore the facts so you don't feel compelled to change. (Really, I do. This explains why I still use a microwave.) So I understand if you don't want to look at this list. (I also feel that we've probably narrowed down our reader audience to the small amount of people who are actually interested in this sort of thing, ha!) SO, if you're willing, check it out! I think I find the "Banned Abroad" section most interesting. (Note: this is not a comprehensive list of all bad, toxic cleaners, just some of the worst.)

So check out the EWG Cleaners Hall of Shame - click on the PDF button.

As for natural cleaners, I have been using vinegar & water for a long time. I used to use it in my kitchen, & now I primarily use it on the tile to clean up messes. It doesn't smell good but works. My absolute favorite cleaner that I use for everything is my Thieves Household Cleaner. It has completely replaced that long list of different cleaners I used before. It's natural, smells awesome (like oils, not artificial fragrance), & works great.

Something I have heard a lot about, but have never tried, is Norwex. Apparently it is a completely natural cleaning option as well. If this is something you're interested in learning more about, you can visit my friend's website & check it out.
