Beware of Some "Natural" Deodorants

On my quest for a good natural deodorant, I learned that many claimed to be "natural" and yet weren't.

I will cover the deodorants I myself have looked in to and have tried. There are many more out there that are just as misleading as these. PLEASE always read ingredients. Know what to look for. There are a list of words I look to avoid like aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol/propanediol, PEG's, petrochemicals, phthalates, "fragrance" or synthetics dyes.

Crystal

Crystal can be found in most all natural food stores. Right on the front they claim "NO Aluminum Chlorohydrate".

If you haven't heard yet, Aluminum is a horrible neurotoxin that should NOT be in the body in ANY amount. It is linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. Aluminum is used in deodorant to block the pores from releasing sweat. While that seems appealing to most Americans, sweat helps to detox the body. When I stopped using antiperspirants, my body super detoxed for about a week. I felt like I was sweating constantly. Suddenly, it stopped. I was like normal. My homemade deodorant kept me stink free, and I didn't sweat unless on a super hot day, and it wasn't enough to make any embarrassing stains.

So, with this knowledge, any person would find Crystal a great find! Oh but wait. What's that ingredient on the back? AMMONIUM ALUM. Also known as potassium aluminum sulfate. Yeah, that's just another form of aluminum.

Tom's of Maine

Now, this deodorant is aluminum free. I have also tried it. If anything, it was the worst deodorant I have ever tried in my life. I am pretty sure it actually managed to MAKE me stink. I would put this on, and in 30 minutes, I would just smell so weird. I don't even do that deodorant free! But its ingredients are also not ideal. The first thing listed is Propylene Glycol. It is a synthetic used as an antifreeze. It is a toxin that is best avoided, even in small doses.

Jason

This is another very common deodorant. I only bring this one up because I see it at just about any natural grocery store. It's first ingredient is Propanediol which is Propylene Glycol, just like in Tom’s deodorant. It also has "Fragrance". What is that, you ask? Well....no clue. It's undisclosed. Which means it can be any type of synthetic or chemical. It isn't hard to find out with the internet that "Fragrance" in any product is not a good thing. So, forgive my lack of a scientific article, but I liked this explanation. Courtney also covered this topic!

So, give your deodorant ingredients a looksie. If you don't know what something is, just look it up. Super easy. Or look for the key words I gave above. Does yours come up short?

If you are looking for the best, healthiest and most trustworthy form of deodorant? Make your own! It's very easy and worth it!! Give Courtney's recipe a try!

  1. I've had some bad experiences with all-natural deodorants, but Lavilin is the best option I have tried. Works so well, and it has a great reputation!
