Three Cheers for Coconut Oil!

We reference coconut oil a lot on the blog, & I just saw this article that dives into the science of it & wanted to share –


Coconut oil is a great source of healthy fats. It can improve brain health & function, give you more energy, kill bacterial & fungal infections, & can lower your risk of heart disease. It’s awesome for your skin & hair & can help you lose fat.*

(Now, not all doctors agree with those statements – I also read this last week – Doctors Warn Against Coconut Oil Habit. You know what I’m going to say, right? Do your own research. Be your own advocate. Be discerning & decide what is best for your family!)

You want to make sure to buy a good quality coconut oil. Look for unrefined, cold-pressed, extra-virgin, organic coconut oil. Costco carries Carrington Farms, which is the brand we buy.

When I went gluten & dairy free while nursing Doodles, I found out that coconut oil is a great substitute for butter when baking (gluten free peppermint brownies, anyone?). I also make French toast on the skillet with coconut oil (great way to get it into the little ones!). Little Man will actually eat it straight from a spoon – this is my super picky eater we’re talking about!

I use it to make my homemade deodorant & moisturizer. I posted that I recently realized it makes a great eye makeup remover! I don’t use an eye cream, so I like that I get the coconut oil on my eyes to hopefully keep that skin healthy (opposed to chemical-filled makeup removers).

I’m sure you all have heard of oil pulling right now – I can’t say that I have experience with it, because I think I might vomit if I try, but Kelsy does it & will post about it soon!
